Secure attachment: what it looks like and how to build it

Securely attached adults are comfortable being close and comfortable being apart. They trust that the people they love will usually be there, and they can say what they need without too much fear. In Hazan and Shaver's classic 1987 study, a little over half of adults described themselves this way. Secure does not mean perfect, and it can be learned.

Signs of secure attachment

Where it comes from

Secure attachment usually grows from care that was reliable and responsive enough: a caregiver who noticed distress and helped with it more often than not. Children in that situation learn that feelings are manageable and that other people help.

Many secure adults did not start there. Psychologists call it earned security when someone with a difficult childhood becomes secure through a stable relationship, therapy, or honest reflection on their past.

Secure is not the same as problem-free

Secure people still feel hurt, jealousy and fear. Security can wobble under stress, such as a move, a new baby, or a partner with a strongly anxious or avoidant style. Two traps are common: sliding into the caretaker role, managing everyone else's emotions while neglecting your own, and letting a stable relationship drift into comfortable autopilot.

How to keep it, or build it

  1. Talk about more than logistics. Set aside time each week for a conversation that is not about schedules, money or chores.
  2. Repair quickly. After a disagreement, come back within a day: own your part and ask what the other person needs.
  3. Let yourself lean on others. Asking for help and accepting it keeps relationships two-way.
  4. Keep your own ground. Friends, interests and time alone stop security from turning into over-functioning for everyone else.
  5. If you are earning security, practice the pause. Notice the old reaction, wait a breath, and choose the response you want to have. Each repetition makes the new response more automatic.

Common questions

How many people are securely attached?

Estimates vary by study and country, but most place roughly half to 60 percent of adults in the secure range.

Can you be secure with some people and not others?

Yes. Attachment can differ by relationship. Many people are secure with friends and more anxious or avoidant with romantic partners.

Can two insecure people build a secure relationship?

Yes, when both understand their patterns and keep choosing repair. The relationship itself can become the safe base that neither had growing up.
